What can shareholders expect in their share?
Jim and Ami grow the full range of vegetables which do well in our Midwestern climate, including 20 varieties of peppers and over 100 varieties of heirloom tomatoes! Also in the shares will be herbs, berries, pears, cut and dried flowers (including some which are edible), micro-greens, and perhaps eggs. (The eggs would be provided to the CSA by another farmer — please contact Jim and Ami for details.) Jim and Ami also can their extra veggies and share their pickles, applesauce, salsa, jams/jellies, &etc.
What makes Red Ridge Farm a unique CSA:
Jim hails from a self-sustaining, large farming family, and both he and Ami have extensive horticultural experience thanks to their time spent working at Powell Gardens and their landscaping design business, not to mention their own home gardening experiments! They are dedicated to using organic growing methods (transitioning toward organic certification), utilizing compost, crop rotation, row covers, and companion planting of herbs and flowers to attract beneficial insects while deterring pests. They used high tunnels last year to further help with pest reduction and season extension. They focus on growing heirloom and “tried and true” varieties, including some items from saved seed.
Jim and Ami got their market-farming feet under them in 2010 at the Community Market at Brookside (KCMO), and can be found there again this year — continuing their popular “Market CSA”!
CSA members are not required to work at the farm as a part of their share, but volunteers are always welcome (please arrange your visit ahead of time). Ami also enjoys giving farm tours and giving workshops for civic groups, garden clubs, etc. Contact her for details!
