What can shareholders expect in their share?
Nancy grows organic produce from heirloom and hybrid fruits and veggies, trying to focus on gourmet veggies for more taste and foods that can be eaten raw. Nancy also grows some Asian and specialty crops (tahitian melons, edible luffa, jicama, yard-long red beans, red okra, salsify, etc.). Soil-grown (as opposed to hydroponic) microgreens, edible flowers, dehydrated herbs, jellies, syrups and teas, and organic bath care products will also accompany weekly shares. The bath care products may be such things as lavender body butter, macadamia nut oil soap, chocolate sugar scrubs, liquid geranium hand soap, or lip balm.
What makes Pearly Gates a unique CSA:
With 30 years of farming under her belt, Nancy has become a unique combination of food grower and personal care products producer, as exemplified by the share contents described above. Although not certified organic, Nancy uses organic practices in her farming, utilizing crop rotation, cover cropping, and “green manures” to build her farm’s soil. She fertilizes only with products from her own farm or purchased from organic sources.
Volunteers are welcome at peak planting/harvest times, and will receive either produce or personal care products in exchange for their help.
