What can members expect in their share?

Through Common Harvest Farms, CSA members will receive a bag each week of seasonal produce that is fresh and ready to eat from the fields of Common Harvest Farms’ three farms in Douglas County.  The bag will typically contain 6-8 different items of a variety of vegetables, herbs, some small fruit, and sometimes eggs.  Quantities are always a manageable size, and generally based on the amount required for a typical four-serving recipe.

Every ten days or so, CSA members will receive e-newsletters featuring news from the farm, information about the different types of veggies, tips for produce preparation and storage, and recipes to try.

If CSA members don’t let Jill know ahead of time that they won’t be able to pick up (or arrange for someone else to pick up) their share for a particular week, their share that week will be donated to a charitable organization.

What makes Moon on the Meadow’s CSA unique:

Jill Elmers has been farming for nine years, and started Moon on the Meadow’s CSA in 2006.  Located within the Lawrence city limits, Moon on the Meadow attained organic certification in 2007.  In 2010, Jill joined with the Buller family to buy another farm just down the road, adding 34 acres to the farm and creating Common Harvest Farms — now providing chickens, perennial asparagus and rhubarb, and heirloom wheat for flour.  This year the new farm will be eligible for organic certification, too.  Red Tractor Farm, run by Jessica Pierson (a former apprentice at Moon on the Meadow) and Jen Humphrey, will also supply some of the weekly share from their sustainable farm on the south side of Clinton Lake.

This year, Moon on the Meadow will host several volunteer days at the farm as well as an open house sometime mid-season.  Dates and details TBA.

Volunteers who are interested in learning more about how the farm works are always welcome; contact Jill for information.
