In 2012, Karbaumer Farm will be changing its “Farm Table” CSA to a new “Garden Gate” CSA program.

This year the Karbaumers are introducing a new concept for their CSA farmer and family partnership: Families will have the opportunity to choose their vegetables and greens in a CSA that combines the idea of a farm market with the share box!  This is a “Bins and Baskets” approach to sharing the harvest straight from the garden gate.

You get your produce directly as it is field-sorted. As a member, you can fill your bins, boxes, baskets and bags yourself! The vegetables you pick will be fresh as the morning, right out of the ground or minimally farm-washed and include all sizes – just as nature intended.

This is how the program works:

During the bountiful harvest season, Karbaumer Farm will hold CSA market days every Thursday. As the days grow shorter and the harvest becomes less plentiful, the markets may not always be held weekly. CSA members will always be kept informed.

On CSA market days, members will be able to choose the harvested produce you want to take home. Quantities may be limited but you never have to take produce home that you know you won’t enjoy. The value of the produce you select is deducted from your share value and when that is depleted, members may purchase more of the harvest in $50 share increments.

This CSA program model is not necessarily for everyone, but if you enjoy experiencing the changing seasons and the challenges of nature, you’ll be able to enjoy the successes of the harvest with this new program as well.

Finally, no farm work is required if you are a member of the CSA but, if you want to spend a few hours on the farm as a volunteer, you are always welcome! Before the season begins, however, members must assure that they have read the 2012 “Farm Table” Guide (contact Klaus and Lee for details).  See also, Karbaumer Farm’s FAQ page.

Share price: $350.  $50 deposit due at sign-up; balance due by April 1.

What makes Karbaumer Farm a Unique CSA:

“Bring your table closer to the farm!”  Karbaumer Farm is powered by Belgian draft horses.  No tractors.  With over 40 years’ combined experience under their belts, Klaus and Lee use NO chemicals in their gardens, not even those organically approved.  They endorse sustainable practices for the health of their animals, their soil, and the planet we share.  Organically-grown vegetables, including many heirloom varieties, eggs from free-ranging hens, and honey are available through farm purchase.

Karbaumer Farm’s new “Garden Gate” CSA combines farm market with share box in a bins-and-baskets approach which allows shareholders a choice in the produce they take home.  CSA families join the Karbaumers for farm events, bonfires and horse-drawn wagon and buggy rides.  A huge cider press, small farm pond stocked with catfish, CSA canning and food-dehydrating equipment are available to members.  Also included are monthly newsletters, Report to Shareholders, and a limited number of small garden patches so families can plant their own vegetables in the Karbaumers’ “Rows to Grow” project.

Visitors are welcome at Karbaumer Farm.  Come see how your food is grown, and meet the farmers who grow it!
