The Market CSA program provides a very flexible way to participate in Community Supported Agriculture. The Market CSA share cost starts at $200 (and up), to which Gibbs Road Community Farm adds 10%, giving CSA members $220 of spendable “veggie cash” at the farm’s stand at local farmers markets. Members come to market and select their veggies. The Market CSA is similar to the Farm CSA in that a commitment and payment is requested by late winter, but is different in that a member chooses what vegetables to take home.
FALL CSA
Gibbs Road Community Farm does weekly Fall/Winter CSA veggie bags beginning in mid-October and continuing as the weather allows. One share size is offered, which costs $25 per week. Shares are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a fantastic, no-commitment way to get weekly fall veggies. Contact Alicia to get onto their weekly email list.
What can members expect in their shares?
The CSA program at the Gibbs Road Community Farm provides members with a weekly bag of fresh, organic produce and herbs. Early season bags will likely include a mix kale, Swiss chard, scallions, carrots, spinach, turnips, microgreens and salad mix. Into the season, the bags will also hold summer squash, cucumbers, potatoes, beets, fava beans, and fresh herbs. Mid-summer CSA bags will offer tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, green beans, edamame, eggplant, tomatillos and fresh basil. The September bags are likely to contain sweet potatoes, winter squash, kale, Swiss chard, spinach, cherry tomatoes, parsley, lemongrass and rosemary. Members can expect 4 – 7 vegetables per week in their CSA bag.
All communication is done via email. Weekly updates arrive to the members’ Inbox by Wednesday morning. The emails include what’s in the bag, yummy recipes, farm updates, call-to-action notices, organization events and opportunities to volunteer.

What makes Gibbs Road Community Farm a unique CSA:
The Gibbs Road Community Farm is the home and original site of the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture. Sitting on two acres in Kansas City, Kansas just north of I-35 and bordering I-635, the farm trains several apprentice farmers each year and offers volunteer opportunities to members of the CSA and KC community interested in becoming more in-tune with food production. The farm has been certified organic since its inception in 1997, following the National Organic Program. The farmers grow over 45 different vegetables and over 200 varieties. The six high tunnels and greenhouse at the farm help make an early start to the season and keep vegetables growing well into the chillier months.
Member involvement at the farm is not required, but always appreciated. Alicia invites you to come out and see how your food is grown. Join in. Get dirty. See how much fun it really is. Lively conversation happens in the field and community grows along with the produce. “Work the Farm” volunteer days are held on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. The farm also hosts several “All Friends” potluck dinners throughout the year.
Potential CSA members can also find Alicia and crew at the Downtown Overland Park Farmers’ Market (Wednesdays), and enjoy Gibbs Road’s fine produce at local restaurants like Aixois, The Farmhouse, Story, Renee Kelly’s, and Nara.
Cultivate Kansas City is a non-profit organization which promotes local food production and consumption in the KC metro area. The Cultivate KC is the parent organization of the Gibbs Road Community Farm, the Juniper Gardens Training Farm, the KC Urban Farms and Gardens Tour, the Beans and Greens program, as well has offering technical support and assistance to new growers. It operates a community greenhouse on site and provides many opportunities through-out the year to get involved and to get growing!
Gibbs Road Community Farm is also a member of the Kansas City Food Circle.
