What can shareholders expect in their share?

Blue Door Farm grows more than 50 varieties of vegetables.  CSA members can expect a good mix of “everyday”  and more exotic vegetables.  You’ll see plenty of lettuce, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, carrots and zucchini.  Be willing to try eggplant, kohlrabi, asian greens, kale and fennel too — Laura can help with recipe and preparation tips.  Along with veggies, herbs, and a part of the annual honey harvest, members will receive a weekly e-mail note with farm news, details about that week’s share contents, and sometimes recipes, cooking suggestions, etc. CSA members are always encouraged to share recipes and ideas with one another.  In addition to veggies grown at Blue Door Farm, 2012 shares may also include sweet corn grown at Spring Creek Farm and/or green beans from Gibbs Road Farm, both local organic/sustainable farms.

When our crazy climate allows, peaches and apples grown at the farm will be included in the shares. Laura also produces organic vegetable and flower transplants, and is happy to offer those to CSA members, along with advice on gardening!

What makes the Blue Door Farm unique:

Laura has been running a CSA for four of the five years she’s been farming, and Blue Door Farm’s current location has attained organic certification.  (Laura may be expanding to a satellite field this year, where she’ll continue growing organically but won’t be certified there.)

Although CSA members aren’t required to do work shifts at the farm, Laura encourages members to join her at the farm for “work parties” during the course of the season.  This allows members to see where and how their food is grown, and helps Laura get through a few big labor-intensive periods (have you ever munched a green bean straight from the vine?  Delish!).

CSA members are otherwise welcome to visit the farm by appointment (Laura doesn’t live at the farm site, and the landlords appreciate having a “heads-up” that visitors are expected).

Blue Door Farm’s produce can also be found on Saturdays at the Brookside Farmers’ Market.
