WHAT MAKES PLATTE PRAIRIE UNIQUE: Steve Mann has long been a voice for change in our local foodshed and eating habits. He has a deep belief in sustainable food production methods and renewing our depleted soil and ecosystems with nature’s own tools, including companion planting and permaculture. A farmer for the past four years, 2010 is the second year of Steve’s CSA. He is one of the few CSA farmers who offer a Fall CSA, plunging right in last fall with a successful run!

Platte Prairie also offers an option for creating an “In Your Yard” CSA — growing food in your yard and sharing it with the community. Contact Steve for more information!

Platte Prairie is one of the KCCSAC’s few CSA farms which requires work shifts of its members, which offers a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time in the dirt, getting to know your farmer and the source of your food, and your other CSA members! For the Summer CSA, full-share members will be schedules for 12 hours of work; partial-share members will work 9 hours; and individual-share members will be scheduled for 8 hours. For the Fall CSA, full-share members will be scheduled for 6 hours and partial-share members will have 4 hours.

Platte Prairie will also be offering no-till workshops and field days in conjunction with Lincoln University Extension; check the farm’s website for details and dates.

Steve has a deep commitment to Food Not Lawns KC and the Squash Blossom Food Co-op, and he will be happy to arrange volunteer opportunities with those organizations for any interested folks.
