GENERAL FARM INFO & FEATURES:

No farm work is required, but shareholders’ help is welcome. Work shares can be arranged; contact farmers for details. The Karbaumers have offered special shares for low-income members in the past (contact them for details). Children are invited to feed greens to the hens and try hanging clothing on the clothesline.

Karbaumer Farm, powered by draft horses for all field and garden work, is a small farm just outside Platte City, Missouri. With over 40 years’ experience under their belts, Klaus and Lee use no tractors and farm organically — no chemicals, antibiotics or hormones are used whatsoever, even those approved by organic certification agencies. A high tunnel provides an early, protected start for the gardens. Klaus and Lee endorse sustainable practices to protect our air and the planet we share. The Karbaumers share their catfish-stocked pond with CSA members, and donate to Harvesters via the gleaning program of the Society of St. Andrew.

The Karbaumers host several events each year, including First Gathering; Bonfire and Horse-drawn Wagon Rides; Vineyard and Orchard Picks; “Applied Green Tomatoes” Challenge; Celebrate the Harvest, and other impromptu occasions.

The Karbaumers try to encourage other farmers to grow food for people and offer any help they can give. Several gardening and vegetable-growing groups have toured the farm, and a group of home-schooling families toured last summer. The Karbaumers also have several educational videos for member events.
